How To Install A Dashboard Cover

A dashboard cover is an automotive accessory that is designed to protect the plastic dashboard of a car. Drivers primarily install these accessories to prevent their dashboard from damage. Dashboard covers come in a range of colors to match various interior decoration schemes and are typically made from durable nylon carpet-like fibers.

Most cars have a dashboard made from plastic and if it is exposed to sunlight, the plastic will start to bleach and fade. During summer, the interior of your car heats up dramatically, resulting to irreversible damage to your windshield, back window and the rear deck. To prevent that from happening, the installation of a dashboard cover is very essential.

To install a dashboard cover, you can follow these simple instructions:

  • Get a sponge and clean the dash with mild detergent. Avoid too much water to avoid moist from getting inside the speaker grilles. Rinse it afterwards.

  • Fit the dash cover. Lay it to the dash and use a hair dryer on medium heat to help the fabric conform to the dash. Make sure the defrost vents are lined up with the cutouts in the fabric. You need to locate the alarms, auto headlights or climate control sensors because these usually are premarked. You'll need to cut holes for them with a razor knife. Never cut the dashboard cover while it is on the dash. Next, remove the cover and then make the cutouts.

  • Have hook fasteners and cut it into 1-in.-long strips. The fabric back is the loop part of the hook-and- loop design. The strips will be placed at the key point along the dash which is at the front, at the far side near the windshield, at corners and at transition spots.

  • To keep the fasteners from gripping the cover, lay a single layer of newspaper on the dashboard. Position the cover then slide the newspaper sections out one at a time while you press the cover onto the fasteners. To smooth it, just rub the cover with your hands.
